Tonight we are going to learn about the widow of Zarephath. Let’s start like we always do and read 1 Kings 17:8-24.

Unfortunately, we don’t know much about the widow of Zarephath but what we do know is she had faith. She is not an Israelite, her husband died, and she was left to provide for herself and her son. Now when we meet her, the prophet Elijah came and asked her for bread and water. I’m sure she thought that he was crazy considering there was a famine in the land and she barely had anything for her family. She told Elijah that her plan was to cook what she had left and then prepare to die. Elijah told her not to fear and to make a cake. He told her that God had said her jar of flour would never run out and her jug of oil would never run dry as long as there was a famine in the land.

I’m sure she felt stressed, wondering how she was actually going to do this. She might’ve also felt that she had nothing left to lose since her plan for them was to die. However, she did what Elijah said to do and they ate for many days, just like Elijah said. Later on, her son became sick and died, and through Elijah, God raised him from the dead. God was teaching her that He would provide for every need she would ever face and He would do what He said He would do. He will do what He promises us.

Let’s discuss what we just read. I have some questions that I want you to think about, write them down, and if you’d like to comment below we can discuss them together!

  1. What did we learn about God and His character in the life of the widow?
  2. What character qualities, positive or negative, do we see in the widow’s life?
  3. What can I learn from the widow’s story and apply it to my own life?

Each day when she went about her daily life, she was reminded of the grace that she had been given. God never lets us down even when we doubt Him. Every day we are reminded of His mercy, His grace, and His great love for us. He is always faithful!

I hope you enjoy this study and decide to come back. Tomorrow, we’ll learn about Esther and how God moved in her life. I hope you enjoy the beautiful sunset that was made by our loving Father and y’all have a wonderful night.
