Hello everyone! I hope this is a wonderful week for everyone! Today we will be going over passages Ephesians 4:31 & Philippians 4:19-20. “The gospel humbles us and reminds us that we have been given every spiritual blessing in Christ.”

Bitterness can creep into the heart like a weed, strangling our joy and overshadowing the good in our lives. Sometimes it stems from deep hurts, unmet expectations, or seasons of loss and struggle. But as believers, we are reminded that God’s faithfulness is an anchor—steady and unwavering in the storms of life. Turning to His promises and truths can uproot bitterness and plant seeds of peace, grace, and thanksgiving. Ephesians 4:31 instructs us with these powerful words: “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.” While this may sound like a simple directive, the actual act of releasing bitterness requires us to lean on God’s strength. It begins with surrender—acknowledging the weight of our feelings and laying them at the feet of Jesus. When Naomi, in the Book of Ruth, lost her husband and sons, she lamented, Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter” (Ruth 1:20). Naomi’s words resonate with those of us who have walked through seasons that feel overwhelming and unfair. But Naomi’s story doesn’t end in despair. God’s hand of faithfulness brings redemption through Ruth and Boaz, culminating in the birth of Obed—an ancestor of King David and, ultimately, Jesus Christ (Ruth 4:17). Even in moments of bitterness, God is still at work, weaving His plan of goodness and restoration. When we feel that life has left us with empty hands, we can cling to the truth of Philippians 4:19-20: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” God’s provision may not always come in the form we expect, but His faithfulness ensures that He will meet our needs in His perfect timing and wisdom. Naomi’s story reminds us that God’s blessings are often beyond what we can imagine. Through her grief, He provided not only for her immediate needs but also for the future lineage of salvation. This glimpse of His faithfulness can encourage us to trust Him, even when our circumstances feel bleak.

God’s faithfulness calls us to respond with gratitude and praise. Ephesians 1:3 declares, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” When bitterness tempts us to focus on what we’ve lost, we can turn our eyes to the blessings God has given us—both physical and spiritual. His faithfulness reminds us that we are never forgotten, never abandoned, and always deeply loved. Bitterness may try to take root in our hearts, but the faithfulness of God provides the antidote. As we look to Him and His Word, we are reminded that His plans are good, His provision is certain, and His love is unchanging. Just as Naomi experienced redemption and restoration, so can we find healing through His promises. Let us release bitterness, trust in God’s faithfulness, and praise Him for His unwavering goodness.

Let’s discuss what we just learned. I have some questions that I want you to think about, write them down, and if you’d like to comment below, we can discuss them together!

  1. How are you prone to bitterness?
  2. What is at the root of your bitterness?
  3. List 3-5 ways God has been faithful to you.

“God’s faithfulness and goodness wash away our bitterness and replace it with joy and gratitude.”

Today’s verse for Lent prayer is 1 John 4:9 and the prayer prompt is, “Thank God for His great love that He showed by sending His Son to give you new life. Then, as you go about your day today, take time to mediate on God’s love for you.”

I hope you enjoy this study and decide to come back. Tomorrow we will discuss Resisting Jealousy by Resting in Christ. I hope you enjoy the beautiful sunset that was made by our loving Father and y’all have a wonderful night.
