Let’s open our Bibles to Judges and read 4-5. Deborah is known as a soldier who leads the men of Israel into battle, but she is also known as a woman of great faith. Deborah is introduced as a wife, a prophetess, and a judge. She certainly had her hands full! She was faithful to the Lord and lead the hearts of men back to God.
The book of Judges tells us over and over how the people of Israel were in the cycle of sin and obedience. They would obey and then fall right back into sin. Deborah became a judge when the people were doing what they wanted, what they considered to be right and not what the Lord wanted. Deborah’s job was to bring them back to God. When Deborah tells Barak to go into battle he asks her to go with him. She was clearly a well-respected woman because of her wisdom and insight from the Lord. She went with Barak into battle and declared that God would deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman which was HUGH! As we’ve discussed earlier, woman were not at the top of list for anything. But God had a bigger plan for Deborah’s life.
When the battle is over we read the song of Deborah. Her song is of praise to the Lord and showed her love and devotion to God. She gave God all the glory in every aspect. After the battle was won, the people were given rest as their hearts were turned back to God. Deborah was a woman of honor and courage. She bravely did what God asked her to do and then gave Him all the praise and glory. Her life is a reminder that God uses all of us- even when we seem like the unlikely choice. The victory is God’s alone; the credit is never ours. I am so thankful for a faithful God who uses his children to praise Him in so many different ways.
Let’s discuss what we just read. I have some questions that I want you to think about, write them down, and if you’d like to comment below we can discuss them together!
- What did we learn about God and His character in the life of Deborah?
- What character qualities, positive or negative, do we see in Deborah’s life?
- What can I learn from Deboral’s story and apply it to my own life?
God will always be there for us and will always remain faithful. He uses us in ways that we could never imagine. He used Deborah, a woman, to lead men into battle. He can use us for anything! I want to be bold and daring like Deborah. I want to give God the glory in every aspect of my life.
Well, ladies, we are finishing the second week of our devotionals together! As we wrap this week up I want you to answer a few more questions. Make sure you’re comfortable, get your coffee, your blanket, and let’s reflect on this week.
