Hi ladies! I pray you are doing well and that you are ready to begin day two of our Lent devotional. Read Genesis 1-3 and we’ll see how God created our world and how sin affected it.
In the beginning, God created a world that was filled with goodness. Genesis 1-2 tells us what the world looked like- it was beautiful and abundance (Isaiah 48:13). Everything was created good, because God is good, and we were created in His likeness- to reflect His holiness. If you look inside of our bodies, there is evidence that we are God’s creation. In our DNA, we have the numbers 10-5-6-5 which if we line these numbers up in Hebrew spells YAHWEH. In our lungs, we need oxygen to breathe, and we get oxygen from trees- the structure inside our lungs looks like trees. We have a protein in the cellular matrix that holds our body together and it also directs the other cells in our bodies where to go. This protein molecular called Laminin and it looks like the cross. Women have one extra rib than a man. God CREATED US in His image.
Obviously, God is all knowing and He knew that we would fall into sin, He knew that every sinful thought, every action, every word that we would speak, and He still chose to create us. Even after knowing that Adam and Eve would fall into sin, He still gave us free will. He wants us to choose Him- not be forced. A lot of arguments around Adam and Eve is that if Eve didn’t eat the apple, we could be okay. If Eve didn’t tempt Adam, men would be okay (I won’t stay on this long, but I do feel it needs to be addressed). This is false and here is why: In Ephesians 5:23 it says, “For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior.” Genesis 2:24 says, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” This unity is foundational, indicating that both husband and wife are to work together as one, sharing in the joys and challenges of life. Both husbands and wives are called to mutual submission and respect, as seen in Ephesians 5:21: “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” This mutual submission is rooted in love and respect, ensuring that both partners honor God in their relationship. So, husbands are responsible for their wives, and this includes their spiritual actions. Eve made a choice and so did Adam. Adam is the head of the marriage which also means he is responsible for her actions. The fall is placed on Adam.
Okay, we’re back on our study. In Genesis 3, it shows us the brokenness and heavy consequences that sin creates (Romans 6:23). It shows us how sin does not just affect ourselves; it also affects those around us. But God is so GOOD that He gave Adam and Eve a promise- a covenant. That someone from their offspring would crush Satan. God did push their sin, but with His grace, He gave them a promise. God does not forsake us. This also shows us that from the beginning of the gospel, it points to Jesus. This is where God reveals His promise of salvation and how He is a God of grace. Genesis 1-3 teaches us that sin brings death, but God brings life. I know that sometimes it feels as if sin runs rampant in our lives and the world around us, but we serve a God where sin cannot outrun His power, His grace, His love, or His promises.
Let’s discuss what we just read. I have some questions that I want you to think about, write them down, and if you’d like to comment below, we can discuss them together!
- How does knowing that God created everything good help us understand where sin came from?
- What does it say about God’s character that He not only created everything good but also put forth a plan to remove sin?
- How does God’s promise to remove sin once and for all give you hope as you struggle with sin?
When we put our faith in Jesus, our relationship with God is restored, and we are rescued from spiritual death. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10 (ESV). Today’s verse for Lent prayer is Isaiah 42:1-3 and the prayer prompt is, “Praise Jesus for faithfully bringing justice through His ministry and His death on the cross. Thank Him for the justice He will ultimately provide when He returns to set all things right.”
I hope you enjoy this study and decide to come back. Tomorrow we will go over Recognizing our sin and need for a Savior. I hope you enjoy the beautiful sunset that was made by our loving Father and y’all have a wonderful night.
