Welcome! I am still catching up on blogs that I missed and I apologize for the mess up. Today we are going over Knowledge and how we can make this an idol. Open your bibles and read Romans 1:21-22; 1 Corinthians 3:18-20; and Deuteronomy 29:29.
From the time we are little to being an adult, we are in some type of educational setting. We are surrounded by knowledge, from being in school, to reading books, looking things up on the internet, etc. Knowledge is everywhere. The thing that we need to look for is are we consumed by knowledge? Are we looking to be the smartest person in the room? Are we trying to prove how intelligent we are by pursing degree after degree? Whatever the reason, we need to make sure we aren’t putting our own personal gain above the Lord. Despite what the world tells us, knowledge is limited. We do not have all the answers for a reason (Deuteronomy 29:29). In Genesis, we learn about Adam and Eve eating from the tree of knowledge. Satan deceived them by convincing Eve that God was holding them back. That He wanted all the wisdom for Himself. Adam and Eve partook of the fruit because it was, “desirable for obtaining wisdom” (Genesis 3:6). The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is a symbol for tendency to exalt our own knowledge over the loving knowledge of God.
Exalting knowledge is an idol that is reflected in our lives in different ways. Again, it might look like we are being consumed by gaining degrees or being the smartest in the room. Pursuing this may leave you discontent, always desiring more, or it might leave you searching for answers within yourself. When we look for answers within ourselves, we neglect the endless source of wisdom found in God. As humans, we are limited in every way. There are some things that are we cannot fathom, and there are things of this world that we will not understand.
Let’s discuss what we just read. I have some questions that I want you to think about, write them down, and if you’d like to comment below we can discuss them together!
- How might you be tempted to idolize the pursuit of knowledge?
- In what ways do you elevate your own knowledge over the knowledge of God?
- What does the Bible have to say about those who claim to be wise?
- How can you cultivate a greater knowledge for God in His Word? How might this ultimately lead you to trust Him in the unknown things of this world?
God has created us with minds to know Him more deeply than any other form of His creation. Our Father is delighted in being known by us. When aren’t we delighted by being known by the people we love most? God offers us an eternal fountain of wisdom to us through His Word. This beloved book is filled with knowledge of who God is, how we are to live in light of that knowledge, and how precious we are to Him. Anything that is a mystery to us, is not a mystery to Him. He knows all, He sees all, and understands all. All that is provided to help us know and understand the way the world functions are a gift from God.
I hope you enjoy this study and decide to come back. In our next study we will go over Success and Achievements and how we make it an idol. I hope you enjoy the beautiful sunset that was made by our loving Father and y’all have a wonderful night.
