Today we are going to learn about Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Take some time to read these verses, Matthew 1:18-25; 21-23; Luke 1:26-80; 2:1-52; and John 19:25-27.
We all know the story of Mary. She was a virgin, and she is the mother of Jesus. Something else to consider is that Mary was probably a teenager when she discovered she would be the mother of the Messiah. That must’ve been terrifying. But her reaction is faith. She knew that God planned this for good and He would be right by her side along the way. Becoming pregnant before being married was certainly a scandal, but Mary submitted herself in joyful obedience. We read that Joseph almost divorced Mary, which would’ve caused more scandal, but an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told Joseph His plan.
In Mary’s song, we see how she praises the Lord. We see her deep love for the Lord and her love and knowledge of God’s Word. Her song is full of references to passages in the Old Testament. Her song is full of praise and humble adoration that God would choose her.
We continue to see Mary throughout the life and ministry of Jesus. Jesus clearly had a deep love for His mother. In some ways, May must’ve known that the day would come when He would die. There could have been nothing more agonizing than watching her Son die for the sins of the world and for hers as well. I am not a mother, and I could never imagine that type of pain. The heartbreak that she went through. That is unbearable.
Let’s discuss what we just read. I have some questions that I want you to think about, write them down, and if you’d like to comment below we can discuss them together!
- What did we learn about God and His character in the life of Mary?
- What character qualities, positive or negative, do we see in Mary’s life?
- What can I learn from Mary’s story and apply it to my own life?
Mary’s life is a testament to the grace found in Jesus. She was faithful, and humble, and was chosen to be the mother of the Messiah. She would birth Him, nurture Him, raise Him, and eventually watch Him do what He was sent to do. Mary was a woman who loved her Son and Savior and loved God’s Word. Her life reminds us that God uses ordinary people who will submit to Him to do incredible things.
